Vince Gill and Amy Grant Golf Classic
7/20/2009

On Aug. 3-4, the Vince Gill and Amy Grant Golf Classic will be held at the Aspen municipal golf course. The event benefits Challenge Aspen, a Snowmass-based nonprofit that provides year-round recreational, cultural and competitive experiences for anyone with a disability.

Because the Snowmass Club is a private golf club, its members already had an event scheduled for that weekend, forcing Challenge Aspen to find a new venue.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, Gill and Grant will be joined by PGA pros Fred Funk, Dennis Watson, Bob Gilder and Chris Starkjohann at the Aspen Golf Course, as well as those who choose to pay $2,500 to play individually, or $10,000 for a foursome.

That “Golfer's Deluxe” package includes golf and instruction with the PGA Tour pros, rubbing elbows with celebrities like Kevin Costner, Johnny Mosely, actor Gregory Itzin and former baseball players Dennis Rasmussen and David Cook.

The price includes two tickets per person to an Aug. 3 gala at the Doerr-Hosier Center on the Aspen Meadows Resort, which will be headlined by Gill and Grant. Tickets for the gala only are available for $500.

Challenge Aspen also will honor a group of injured servicewomen recently home from Iraq. The group will be attending a retreat called Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (C.A.M.O) that will include rafting and equine therapy, and wellness and educational workshops.

The Aspen event comes two months after the official launch of Challenge America, which is an outgrowth of Challenge Aspen. The initiative aims to support returning injured veterans and their families by networking recreation, jobs and housing programs for them.

“This golf tournament is really supported by the community because it's for disabled veterans,” said Steve Aitken, director of the Aspen Golf Course.

The initiative's mission is to work with communities across the United States in linking new and existing services, and supporting the development of recreational and occupational programs for them.
